Ian McWhinney and his family live on, and own, Dry Island, its only permanent inhabitants (as an aside, see McWhinney’s spoof website islonia.com, which made headlines in 2010 for his tongue-in-cheek declaration of independence for their little island in the middle of Loch Gairloch). They make a living in diverse ways, variously letting out holiday accommodation, fishing for shellfish and running ‘Shellfish Safaris’ in the summer months, giving visitors the chance to catch their own supper of langoustines, crab or squat lobster. Ian’s wife Jess runs a stall on Gairloch Pier selling a wide range of fish and shellfish straight from the boats and all from Scottish waters. They also attend farmers’ markets all over the north of Scotland and deliver throughout the U.K.
